Annual memorial barbecue raises funds for Ag Econ students

Jerry Glenn West was a well-respected professor in the MU Agricultural Economics department. He began teaching at MU in 1958 and taught here until his unexpected death in December 1993. Throughout his time at the University, West was known for his teaching, research, and advising, according to Ag Econ Club president and sophomore agricultural economics major, Katie Jarboe.

Since West passed away, the Agricultural Economics club has been holding a barbecue in his memory to honor all of his contributions to the department.

The barbecue was served in the Agriculture Building hallway on Wednesday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Club members served Bandana’s Barbeque to passing students, faculty and staff.

Maureen Hamill, junior agricultural economics major and vice president of programs and scholarships in the organization, led in planning the event.

The group also took orders from many faculty members in the College and delivered those orders all over campus.

Mandi Scheulen, freshman Ag Econ Club member, really enjoyed helping with the event.

“Working at the memorial barbecue was a good experience for me because I had a chance to meet and interact with some of the faculty I had not met before. It was a chance to do some networking,” Scheulen said. “I would like to continue this event throughout the years because it is a great way to give back to the faculty and staff for all they do for the students.”

The money raised at this event goes to a scholarship fund for Agricultural Economics students.

“As a student in CAFNR, having this barbecue makes our chapter realize the support we have from faculty and staff across the College,” Jarboe said.

In addition to the barbecue, the organization also raises funds by holding a labor sale, which rents out its members to faculty that need help at any time. The sale goes on throughout the year.
