Annual plant sale brought spring inside the Ag Building
by Hannah Riddle, posted May 12, 2009

The smell of freshly grown green plants and flowers filled the halls of the Agriculture Building April 28 and 29. The rainy, gloomy days outside did not put a damper on the Tiger Garden annual plant sale.

MU students grow all the plants at Tiger Garden in the greenhouses.

“This is our third year, and we’ve been open for almost four years,” MU student Kelsy Maddox said. “House plants are maintained by students, and we do all the stuff a normal florist would do.”

Although most student workers at Tiger Garden are plant science majors, Maddox is a business major.

“I took plant science 2002; it’s a floral design class,” she said.. “I loved it.”

The Tiger Garden sale had many vegetable plants this year: eggplants, pumpkin, zucchini, and flowers such as geraniums, marigolds, and many others.

Also this year, Tiger Garden used a new type of 100 percent biodegradable pot called the Living Pot. These pots are planted in the ground and eliminate the need for a plastic pot.

“The plant is good for the environment, and you don’t have to have the plastic pot to plant it,” Michelle Brooks, greenhouse coordinator for MU said.

There were many people at the sale. And if you missed it this year, you can check out Tiger Garden any time in the Agriculture Building. They make flower arrangements, sell plants and many other beautiful items. Plus, you can student charge.

“We have a lot of loyal customers, and some that just stop by,” Maddox said.
