Meet Margaret Haring
by Kerry O'Connor, posted Sept. 19, 2011

For many students, leaving small-town Belle, Mo., and coming to the University of Missouri wouldn’t be easy, but for Margaret Haring, that’s not the case.

“It’s very different! I’m slowly getting used to it,” Haring said. “It sounds silly, but stuff like walking downtown is weird to me. We used to have to drive miles to get to stores and now I can just walk there. It’s bizarre!”

Haring graduated from a class of 55 at Belle High School. Belle is located about 25 minutes north of Rolla, Mo., and has a population of 1,352. Living in a small town didn’t bother Haring though, she enjoyed being able to go into town and know someone just about everywhere she went. She described Belle as one of those “everybody knows everybody” towns.

Haring has always been involved with her church, the First Baptist Church (Belle) and was a member of United by the Prince of Salvation (UPS), a Christian religious group. She currently attends the Baptist Student Union (BSU) RealLife and plans to be involved with their LifeChange study groups. Haring was also involved in the Math Club and Science Olympiad at her high school. Her classmates would describe her as fun, friendly and funny.  Haring won the “Class Clown” award for Belle’s Senior Superlatives.

Haring has two older brothers who also attended the MU as did her grandparents and parents. Her faith in God and her family are the two most important things to her. For Haring, MU was the only place she could see herself going especially since her whole family had attended. Haring also felt MU would be a good place for her to explore her options.

Haring grew up in the country, living across the road from her farm where she raised many goats and calves over the years. In her free time she enjoys feeding her goats and petting her cattle, or doing anything outdoors.

Haring also enjoys going to concerts (Warped Tour especially), taking pictures, movie nights, and creating movies. She has been making movies with one of her closest friends since they were in second grade and they use to pretend to be the news anchors from KRGG (one of Belle’s local TV news stations).

Although Haring is currently a freshman and has not decided on a major, she feels that through CAFNR she will be introduced to something she likes and enjoys doing.

“I admire agriculture because my family has been farming on the same land for over 100 years,” Haring said. “I really treasure it.”
