Students learn to mind their manners at annual Career Services Etiquette Dinner

by Kerry O'Connor, posted Dec. 7, 2011

The CAFNR Career Services held its Etiquette Dinner Thursday, Nov. 10, at 5 p.m. in Eckles Hall. The cost was $25 per person. Leslie Jett, executive chef and CAFNR resident instructor, led the dinner. He taught students how to butter their bread, hold table conversation, and the dos and don’ts of being a host, along with many other lessons.

As Chef Jett was teaching the students proper dinner etiquette, he shared some facts with them. He told the students a slower eater is destined to have an hourly job when a faster eater will most likely have a salary wage.  He also shared stories of his own experiences of formal dining and being a host at his home.

The Career Services Etiquette Dinner has been held for more than seven years. Kara Ebe and Stephanie Chipman, CAFNR Career Services, feel the dinner is important because the students who attend are learning enough to be comfortable.

“We agree it’s important because the students are able to shine,” Ebe said.

Being confident about proper etiquette means the students aren’t constantly worrying about what they are doing wrong and instead can focus on doing what is right.

“We feel it is a great opportunity for students to have education on formal dining in a non-threatening environment,” Chipman said.
