A Mizzou landmark, Buck's Ice Cream Place, celebrates a 20th anniversary this year.
To mark the occasion, Buck's is hosting an Ice Cream Social Oct. 15 from 4 to 6 p.m. The event is open to students, alumni, faculty and staff of the College of Agricuture, Food and Natural Resources.
Students from all across campus make the trek to Eckles Hall to reach Buck’s, home to the famous Tiger Stripe ice cream. Those living in Hatch Hall have the shortest walk to get their ice cream fill: Buck’s Ice Cream is just north of Hatch in the south part of Eckles Hall.
Sandy Zaring, agricultural engineering administrative assistant, gave some advice to two students from Germany before they set out on their search, “Just look for the black and gold canopy!”

Like the gold and black canopy where Buck’s can be found, their most famous — and customer’s favorite — ice cream flavor, Tiger Stripe, was created with the same colors. Tiger Stripe is french vanilla ice cream with “stripes” of dark chocolate and a touch of a secret ingredient. Rick Lindhart, the man in charge of overseeing Buck’s Ice Cream Place, said he would not give up that secret ingredient.
Twenty years ago, Buck’s opened with the help of Wendell and Ruth Arbuckle, both graduates of MU. After retiring from a long run in the ice cream research field Arbuckle, along with his wife, decided to give back to Mizzou by opening an ice cream parlor. Thus, Buck’s was born.
Lindhart has been in charge of Buck’s for 18 of its 20 years. The facility has gone through some minor changes over the years, and this past summer's renovation project opened up more seating.
Other new things that occurred this summer were creating and testing new ice cream flavors.
“I have nothing to do with making the new flavors, it’s all the students,” Lindhart said.
Almost 10 new flavors have been released this summer: Maple Bacon, Cherry Chip Yogurt and Raspberry Amaretto, just to name a few. That does not include the other 15 flavors they have to offer. One dip of ice cream is just $1.25 and a double scoop is $2. Student charge is accepted.
Buck’s Ice Cream Place is open from noon to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and Saturdays through Homecoming.
