Forestry Club to start annual Christmas Tree Sale on Dec. 3
by Lauren Schad, posted Nov. 30, 2009
Nothing says Christmas better than a beautifully decorated tree, according to the MU Forestry Club. For more than 40 years, the CAFNR organization has been selling Christmas trees in Columbia. This year’s sale will begin on Thursday, Dec. 3, at the northeast side of Memorial Stadium/Faurot Field.
The Forestry Club will once again be selling Scotch Pine and Balsam Fir Christmas trees, as well as Christmas wreathes. The trees that are sold are all grown throughout Missouri. According to Mark Peper, Forestry Club tree farm manager, the Scotch Pine trees came from the Starr Pines Christmas Tree Farm in Boonville, Mo., and the Balsam firs com from E.H. Glueck and Co. of St. Louis.
In upcoming years, the club hopes to sell trees from their own plantations.
“We are in a transition phase from our old pine plantation to our new pine plantation,” said Khristy Huber, Forestry Club president. “We will be able to harvest from our new pine plantation in a couple of years.”
The Christmas tree sale is the club’s only fundraiser for the entire year. It helps fund all club activities, such as participation in the Annual Midwestern Forester’s Conclave, which is a Timbersports competition with other colleges and universities in the Midwest.
“This is our major fundraiser and all the proceeds go toward scholarships and club activities like professional conferences,” Peper said.
The sale will begin on Thursday, Dec. 3 from 4 to 6 p.m, and Dec. 4 through 6 and Dec. 11 from 8 a.m to 8 p.m. or until all trees are sold.
