Public safety day kicks off CAFNR Week

How many days does it take meat to spoil in the refrigerator? How long is enough time for hand washing? What are things to remember when operating a lawn mower?
These questions and more were answered at the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources’ Public Safety Day. The event started off CAFNR Week on Thursday, Sept. 17 in Trowbridge Livestock Arena.
A new event this year, Public Safety Day was held as a way for CAFNR organizations to interact with the Columbia community. All area elementary schools were invited to attend the event.
“We needed a community service activity directed toward the kids, and farm safety is important to us,” said Kaity Kerwin, tri-director of the CAFNR Week steering committee.

Ten CAFNR student organizations were represented at the event with displays ranging from cooking and food safety, to tractor and machinery safety. The Columbia Fire Department and Police Department were also there to talk safety and give tours of their vehicles.
The fire department said it was important to be involved in this event on campus because safety isn’t only for young kids. Most people think they are safer as they get older, but sometimes we find that’s not the case, a fireman said.
Mallory Meyer, member of the CAFNR Week steering committee, would like to see this event come back again next year.
“I would like to see it grow,” Meyer said. “It’s more convenient to have it on our campus to teach safety to our community.”
Kerwin agrees that Safety Day should be an annual event for CAFNR Week.
“As a first-time event if has potential to be successful,” Kerwin said.
