Little Ag Expo promotes CAFNR to MU campus
Story and photos by Sean O'Brien, posted Sept. 24, 2009

Many students went about their usual schedule on Sept. 21. They went to their classes, studied for tomorrow’s exam, and saw a big, green tractor in front of the Memorial Union. What? As the students approached the John Deere and Case tractors, they may have wondered what was happening. Students and organizations participating in the event were happy to explain that it was part of a week-long celebration of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources.

Equipment parked in front of Memorial Union drew some curious onlookers as CAFNR students promoted the college.

The tractors were lined up for the Little Ag Expo, which was held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Lowry Mall. The event included booths, free food, and plenty of CAFNR pride. It is a exhibition of CAFNR week and the college.

“The goal of this is to have a chance to promote agriculture awareness,” said Ashli Weinrich, member of CAFNR Week steering committee. “We are able to promote this to all students of MU, not just CAFNR students.”

There were ten organizations that participated, including Alpha Gamma Rho, Block and Bridle, and Agricultural Education Society.

About 250 MU students enjoyed some barbecue after visiting CAFNR club booths at the Little Ag Expo.

Weinrich said that the event was successful this year. It increases awareness of CAFNR, as well as letting students across the university know about CAFNR Week. Altogether, they were able to feed about 250 students.

“I really enjoyed the event,” said Sylvia Acker, a student of MU. “I did not know what was going on with the tractors until I came up to the booths. I even had to earn my meal by answering questions about agriculture.”

Overall, Weinrich said the Little Ag Expo was a hit. Students became more educated about agriculture and learned what CAFNR Week was all about.
