Show your creative flair at annual pumpkin carving event Oct. 28 in Bengal Lair

With Halloween soon approaching, it is time to get into the fall spirit. The Great Pumpkin Carving will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, in Bengal Lair, located inside Memorial Union. All students are welcome to come to the event, with their student ID, and show their Halloween carving creativity.

Free pumpkins are available to MU students while supplies last. All of the supplies, tools and patterns will be provided; all the students have to do is create a masterpiece.

The Great Pumpkin Carving is a part of the Department of Student Life’s Fall Welcome program. A variety of events and activities are held throughout the fall semester to enhance the student’s experience.

Kathy Murray, assistant director of campus activities says this event has been going on for almost 10 years.

“This is a great event for everyone on campus,” Murray said. “We consider this a pumpkin carving event where everything is provided. We even have lights to put in the pumpkins, so they will be dorm friendly.”

Murray and other staff members are even creating a composting plan for the innards of the pumpkins that people usually just throw away.

Murray’s favorite part of the event is introducing the international students to something that may be completely different from their own culture.

“I love seeing someone who is a pumpkin carving veteran teach an international student how to do it,” Murray said. “They are really interested and excited to learn something new.”
