Students look forward to holiday break

What people look forward to most during the semester break varies from person to person. Some are going home just half an hour away, others, flying back over 1,000 miles. Some have not seen their family since the beginning of the semester, while others see their family every weekend. No matter what they are doing over break, all are thankful to get away for a while: to go home and relax, be with loved ones, and not have to worry about finals.
Junior Maggie Doerge lives in St. Charles, and goes home most weekends.
“I am so excited to get to go home and see my family for longer than just a couple days,” Doerge said. “I’m looking forward to the down time.”
Katy Bergen, a sophomore from New Jersey, is excited to be going home to her beach.
“I’m not half as worked up as I was last year about going home,” Bergen said. “I wasn’t used to being this far away from home and couldn’t wait to see my family again, but now I’m used to it here. As excited as I am to see everyone, Mizzou is my home now, and I know my family will always be in New Jersey waiting for me.”
Tim Marlin, a senior, is having his family come to him for Christmas. His parents live in Touterri, Iowa, and are driving down with his sister to stay in his house over the holiday. Marlin plans to fix Christmas dinner for his family, the first time his mother has ever entrusted her son to such an important dinner.
“It has always been the plan to do something new for Christmas this year, but I think Mom was really skeptical about giving me the reigns for Christmas dinner,” Marlin said. “We’ll see if she is able to stay out of the kitchen while I’m in there. And to tell the truth, I’m not quite sure what I’m fixing yet!”
Wherever they are headed, students and staff alike from all over the United States are happy to be seeing their families this holiday break, and glad for the down time that comes with it.
The holiday break starts Dec. 18, and classes resume Jan. 19, 2010.
