Mizzou football player shows promise for the future
by Thomas Mershon, posted Nov. 17, 2008

At 6 feet 5 inches and 290 pounds, Seth Elvis Fisher, or Elvis, is a person who tends to stand out in a crowd. That is unless the crowd is his fellow offensive linemen and other teammates, in which case the redshirt freshman somehow manages to blend in. Being the Mizzou starting left tackle at such a young age shows how quickly Fisher has risen through the ranks.

“Everything I hear and see of him shows he’s doing a good job,” said Mizzou tight end Chase Coffman. “He just needs to keep his head straight and he will be a very good player.”

With such early playing time, Fisher has been forced to adjust and get used to hostile environments.

“He not only played in the Illinois game but at Texas as well, and he has played well so far,” said Mizzou quarterback Chase Daniel. “Texas leads the nation in sacks and you can’t let it get to you because you know you will give up a couple.”

Fisher works hard every week to prepare for each game by studying the other team and working hard in practice.

“I watch film every week and get to know each defense so we can come out and execute to the best of our ability and hopefully ensure a win,” Fisher said.

The game the Tigers played against Texas was a tremendous test for the football team. This is especially true for young players like Fisher who faced their first big road game against the Longhorns.

“At halftime we just had to refocus and regroup and keep our heads in the game,” Fisher said. “Chase [Daniel] came to the linemen and just said we need to calm down and play our game.”

With football taking up so much time, Fisher often tries to escape the world of hard knocks and enjoy his down time the same as most other students.

“My roommate, Brendan Donaldson, and I like to play video games and watch TV,” he said. “We just try and rest most of the time or maybe play pick up basketball games and stuff.”

Originally from St. Petersburg, Fla., Fisher had to step out of the box to come to Missouri. Especially since his father, Jeff Fisher, worked as an announcer for the University of South Florida.

“Missouri recruited me hard and didn’t lie to me about what they were trying to do up here,” Fisher said. “The other Florida schools didn’t recruit me as hard, and I am glad I came to Missouri.”

The only other question left to ask Elvis Fisher seemed too obvious.

“No, I have never been to Graceland,” Fisher said jokingly.
