The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources will kick off CAFNR Week on Sept. 18 with a full slate of events. The theme of CAFNR Week is “Connecting CAFNR while strengthening relationships and promoting a week of growth and excellence.”
Students find CAFNR Week to be an exciting time on campus and look forward to the week’s activities.
“CAFNR Week is a great time for students to unite and share their common bond of agriculture,” said Megan Gallup, senior agricultural education major.
CAFNR Week will begin with Ag in the Classroom. King and queen candidates from each participating club will present a selected agriculture topic to Columbia area schoolchildren. Ag in the Classroom presentations will take place Sept. 15-18.
CAFNR Week’s presence will be felt at Twilight Festival in downtown Columbia from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sept. 18, when CAFNR clubs set up booths promoting agriculture and the college. Twilight Festival is a family event where you can enjoy street bands, concerts and carriage rides. Local artists will exhibit their crafting skills, while numerous activities for kids will be available.
Plan on getting down and dirty at mud volleyball sponsored by MU Independent Aggies at 4 p.m. on Sept. 19, at Trowbridge Livestock Center. Ag Econ Club, BBQ Team, and Fermentation and Food Science Association will serve a BBQ dinner during the event.
Looking for a way to show off your cooking skills? MU Collegiate Cattlewomen will host the Great Grill-Off competition on Sept. 21 at noon. Cooking teams will come prepared to compete in a cooking contest. Each team’s dishes will be judged according to the several food categories. There will also be prizes awarded for each food category.
Agricultural Systems Management Club will host Road Rally on Sunday at 2 p.m. Road Rally teams participate in a scavenger hunt in and around Columbia. Teams compete for the fastest time as well as the most correct answers at the pit stops along the way.
Organizations will promote agriculture and CAFNR at the Little Ag Expo held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Lowry Mall. Educational booths designed to teach MU students about agriculture and CAFNR will be on display.
MU Independent Aggies and Ducks Unlimited will sponsor a Washers Tournament at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 22 at Trowbridge Livestock Center. Teams of two will compete in double-elimination rounds in hopes of winning points for their organization.
King and queen candidates will test their lip synching skills and organizations will perform skits when the CAFNR Week Steering Committee sponsors Skit Night at 6:30 p.m. on Sept. 23 at the Missouri Theatre.
Krista Bock, CAFNR Week Co-Director, said the “most fun event is skit night because it’s the first time clubs get together and participate. It’s fun to see what the clubs can come up with.”
Try your hand at different events at the Super Farmer Contest sponsored by Sigma Alpha at 7:30 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Trowbridge Livestock Center. Teams will compete in farm-related activities and compete for the title of Super Farmer King and Queen.
Motivational speaker, Bruce Vincent, a third-generation logger from Libby, Mont., will speak at 6 p.m. on Sept. 24 at Monsanto Auditorium.
The annual Barnwarming event will conclude CAFNR Week activities at 6:30 on Sept. 25 at The Blue Note, 17 N. 9th St. The night of fun will include king and queen coronation, dancing and a disc jockey.
The winning organization of CAFNR Week will also be announced.
Hotel and Restaurant Management students will serve the evening meal. The menu includes pork loin, grilled Bistro fillets, baked beans, potato salad, cole slaw and dinner rolls.
Tickets for CAFNR Week will be sold starting this week in the Agriculture Building and the Animal Sciences Research Center. Students can purchase Survival Packages for $20, which gets you into all of the events.
