What's sizzling in September

“Hot!” “Smoking!” “Tasty!” These are just some of the exclamations that were overheard at this year’s annual Great Grill-Off held Sept. 21 at Trowbridge Livestock Arena. Steaks were sizzling and appetites were hearty as MU students lined up to get a taste of the action.

“This was my first year going to the Great Grill-Off, and I was impressed,” said Josh Kastman, a junior atmospheric science major from Rogersville, Mo. “This is a great way to start off the week.”

Six organizations competed this year: the Independent Aggies, MU BBQ Team, two teams from the Collegiate Cattle Women and two teams from Alpha Gamma Rho. Teams varied their dishes from homemade recipes to ideas from the Bobby Flay: Boy Meets Grill Cookbook.

“We had a great turnout this year,” said Rachel Bartholemew, an agricultural education major from Archie, Mo. “It was a very competitive atmosphere.”

The MU BBQ Team took home first place in the meat division, while Alpha Gamma Rho placed first in the side dish competition with its grilled pineapple and first in the showmanship category. Mr. Jeff Windett, executive vice president of the Missouri Cattlemen’s Association, Dr. George Jesse, professor of animal sciences at MU, and Mr. Greg Buckman, president of Boone County Cattlemen judged the event this year.
