CAFNR Career Fair promises job, internship opportunities

The College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources Career Services will hold its annual CAFNR Career Fair from 12 to 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 8 at the Reynolds Alumni Center. It will provide CAFNR students an opportunity to learn about career options and meet potential employers.
“The career fair is a way for students to connect with employers for both internships and full time positions,” said Stephanie Chipman, CAFNR Career Services director and event coordinator.
Chipman said there will be 75 companies and organizations in attendance, providing almost every CAFNR major “an opportunity to meet employers right here on campus.” The wide range of companies can offer opportunities for anyone, from freshmen to seniors.
“The career fair is really for any grade level,” said Chipman. “Companies will be there looking for internships and part-time employees as well as long-term, full-time employees beginning their careers.”
Annette Bruch, a senior in Agribusiness Management, said that the career fair was very helpful for her. She got an internship this past summer with the U.S. Soybean Export Council after meeting them at last year’s career fair.
Chipman said that there are already 25 interviews scheduled for the day following the career fair. However, for those who are less certain about their future employment interests, Chipman said that the career fair is not only a networking tool but also a way to learn about the companies and careers.
“You can get different information from talking to a recruiter than you could by just surfing their web page,” Chipman said. “You can also make useful contacts that can lead to an opportunity a year down the road.”
Chipman had some recommendations for students wanting to make the most out of the career fair’s opportunities.
Focus on what it is you have to offer and your unique goal. Do research on companies of interest, prepare your resume, know what you are wearing and be ready to present yourself. Then go and have conversations with representatives, find some good matches, and maybe you will leave with some interviews.
She said that some companies sign students up for interviews right there.
“Don’t be afraid to come,” Chipman added. “It’s a great opportunity to meet people, and you really get a sense of who and what is out there.”
