Registration Worries
Jena Thompson, posted Oct. 23, 2006

As one semester ends, another begins, and it is already time to start thinking about the upcoming winter semester. Early registration is Oct. 23 – Nov. 14. For some students the process may be a bit nerve racking, however with a little preparation, registering can be quite easy.

Jan Dauve, adviser in the agricultural economics department, has had many years of experience working with students and has seen several different problems can create stresses. “Students often are not aware of the requirements they need to meet,” he said. “They are somewhat too dependent on someone else and then do not end up with the best schedule possible for them.” Dauve also said that students that haven’t seriously thought about their careers may also have a problem when creating course schedules.

Freshman MU student, Rachel Tiemann says her problems fall in that area. “I’m undecided, so that makes it very difficult to schedule classes.” She went on to add that she is most concerned with the type of classes to take, because if she doesn’t choose right, she could be in school longer.

Meeting with advisers, researching courses and realizing how those courses will fit into an individual program of study before registering are steps that will ease the scheduling process.

The big picture, according to CAFNR student Mariah Yates, is very important so you don’t end up wasting time and money. “Ag Ed students are required to make a Program of Graduation as freshmen, which I believe is a very useful tool, especially now that I’m a senior.”

Dauve agrees with the importance of planning out courses for more than just the upcoming semester. “Those programs of graduation are wonderful planning and security documents. If all students used them, it would help them make better decisions and allow more time for discussing important issues.”

There’s no better time than the present to get working toward the future.

“Proactive students have better programs, college careers and therefore are better prepared for life after graduation,” Dauve said.
