The Missouri Theater held a new crowd Tuesday, Sept. 26 as CAFNR students and faculty gathered for the annual Skit Night competition, a contest that is part of CAFNR Week at MU.

“The theatre is a much better location that the Blue Note,” general agriculture major Scott Coleman said.

Freshman Luella Fischer agreed that she liked it being in the theater and thought it was a good atmosphere.

The competition comprised of 10 CAFNR-affiliated clubs performing skits and lip syncs to try and show off their spirit and support for their Barnwarming king and queen candidates. Club participants included Collegiate Farm Bureau, Agriculture Economics Club, Alpha Gamma Rho, Sigma Alpha, Mizzou FFA, CAFNR Ambassadors, GDI, Collegiate Cattle Women, Block and Bridle and Alpha Gamma Sigma.

Sophomore Agriculture Education major Miranda Leppin and CAFNR Assistant Dean Jim Spain hosted the event. Spain introduced each of the judges and then began skit night, while encouraging the audience to be active participants.

“Just because we are in the theater doesn’t mean you can’t be loud,” Spain said.

Many of the clubs took this opportunity to joke about their teachers and fellow students. Some of the favorites were Spain, Jan Dauve and Michael Monson, both agriculture economics professors.

Collegiate Farm Bureau performed a skit centered on the characters from The Wizard of Oz. The skit, titled, “The Wizard of CAFNR,” included Dorothy, a student struggling to decide on a major; her pet tiger, Truman; the scarecrow, Dauve; the lion, Stephanie Chipman, director of CAFNR Career Services; the tin man, Monson; and the wizard, Spain. The characters were searching for the classic things: Dorothy a home, Dauve a brain, Chipman some courage and Monson inspiration. In the end, the lesson was that CAFNR is a family, the students are its children and they all help each other.

Collegiate Farm Bureau members (from left to right) Nicki Busdieker (Dorothy), Jared Thomas (Dr. Dauve the Scarecrow) and Zach Kinne (Dr. Monson the Tin Man) perform the “Wizard of CAFNR.” The skit’s lesson showed attendees that by working together everyone can succeed.

The lip syncs, performed by each clubs’ king and queen, ranged from “Promiscuous Girls” to an interpretation of the dance from the movie, Dirty Dancing. Agriculture Economics lip sync was general agriculture major Scott Coleman’s favorite. They had more than a few laughs when their king and queen switched roles in the country song, “Tequila Makes Her Clothes Fall Off.”

There were also classics like “Jackson,” performed twice by Sigma Alpha and Collegiate Cattle Women and non-classics like “I Love NASCAR,” performed by GDI.

Another skit that drew attention to the characteristics of faculty members was Ag Econ Club’s version of CAFNR Family Feud. It featured students posing as Dauve and Monson, with the real faculty members posing as students. Dauve’s infamous greeting, “Good morning econ fans!” was said loudly by an Ag Econ member while he tossed candy out to the audience. Another participant described himself as enjoying golf and smoking cigarettes and not much else as he portrayed Monson.

The Ag Econ Club skit showcased not only CAFNR students, but also CAFNR faculty. Megan Twellman, right, questions Jan Dauve, center, and Jim Spain during CAFNR Family Feud.

The real Dauve stood across from these students dressed as a female college student.

“I liked the teachers being involved - it shows their support,” Fischer said. “I think it is funny to see our teachers outside of a classroom so we can see their real personalities.”

The theme of CAFNR week is, “It’s not only what we do, it’s who we are,” and having students and faculty involved showed that this includes all of CAFNR.
