Does new point system make CAFNR Week more fair?
Julia Shuck, posted Sept. 26, 2006

Bragging rights. Every CAFNR club or organizations wants to be able to say that they won CAFNR Week. This year, CAFNR Week may be easier for smaller clubs to win. Throughout CAFNR Week, various events are held and clubs are given points based on their number of attendance. In previous years, points were given based on the number of people, giving a larger club with more members an advantage. This year the rules have changed to make CAFNR Week more fair for everyone.

“In the past, the points were just figured on the number of members the club had attend, so the larger clubs always won,” Laura Denker, junior agriculture education major, said. Instead of basing points on how many people, it is based on the percentage of members in attendance. Now the small club with perfect attendance has a better shot of winning. In the past, winning groups have included Alpha Gamma Rho in 2005 and Independent Aggies prior to that.

At each event, students are allowed to sign up for two different clubs, for which they are an active member. This keeps students involved with more than one club from having to make the decision of which club to sign up under.

“I think it is more legitimate to see who actually has more participation,” Brittney Meyer, freshman hotel and restaurant management, said. “How involved are the different organizations? The more involved the better off for CAFNR.” While several organization members are in favor of the change there are a few people who think they change makes it harder for larger clubs to meet.

“I think they should split it like congress so that both the smaller clubs (states) and larger clubs (states) are represented fairly according to their size,” said Katie Jarboe, freshman majoring in agriculture business management. According to Katie, it is easier to get 10 people together in one spot as opposed to 100. Before, a club with 100 members who had 50 in attendance may win the points. Now, in order to compete with the smaller clubs with fewer members, the larger clubs must have most, if not all, of their members participating to receive enough points.

The CAFNR Week website, contains the breakdown of official points for better understanding.
