Comedy
Wars: a laugh riot
Evan Hamilton, posted Oct. 16, 2006
Every
Wednesday night at 9:30 p.m., Memorial Union hosts the Comedy
Wars. Performers get on stage and try to pull laughs from
an attentive crowd. This year, performers include veterans
Chris Nester, Ross Taylor, Nick Renkoski and Darin Seal. There
are three newcomers, Kyle Ayers, Brian Hamilton and Lauren
Zima.
According to Nick Renkoski, Comedy Wars started 10 years ago.
“Nobody knows the guy who started, but it’s never
had to be restarted. Generations have kept it going.”
Comedy War members try to draw in more people with flyers
and t-shirts. “Word of mouth is the number one way to
get people,” Renkoski said.
Each member has a story to tell about how he or she arrived
in Comedy Wars. Nester saw Comedy Wars at a freshman orientation.
After an audition, he joined the crew. Zima saw the show too.
“What the hell,” she said, decided to audition
and made it. Taylor is a theater major and joined Comedy Wars
because he liked the aspect of performing on stage.
Renkoski
joined because his mom told him to try out for it. “It’s
a fun chance to be creative,” said Renkoski. “This
semester, a lot of people have shown up. You start recognizing
people who are always here.” Zima calls these familiar
faces “the hardcore fans.”
