Know your rights

On the evening of Oct. 4, an assembly entitled “Know Your Rights” was held at Middlebush Auditorium. At the assembly, there was a video presented demonstrating how to deal with police and other officials along with a question and answer speaker, Dan Viets, a local attorney.
The program was arranged by the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws (NORML). The group’s president Sean Randall said, “[The program was to] promote awareness of the marijuana laws and to inform students of their constitutional rights and how they can exercise them.”
A large crowd attended the event. Randall said he was excited about the number of people who came to support the cause of educating people about their rights and how to protect them.
After the video, Viets took time to speak on the issue and took questions from the audience. Viets gave his own advice of what to do when dealing with officials. He said that people incriminate themselves. People aren’t forced to answer any questions or confess to anything. “The only way to protect yourself is to say as little as possible.”
