Farmers
are returning to their fields for the 2006 corn harvest with
sighs of relief. A season that was shaping up to be another
repeat of a dry 2005, so far has turned out better than expected.
According to Tom Steever of The Brownfield Network, “[The]
Missouri corn crop forecast is to be under the 2004 record,
but is a jump from last year.”
Last year’s
crop was a poor year with average corn yields across Missouri
of 110 bushels per acre. This year is proving to be better
with average yields statewide to be 25 bushels higher than
last year, according to the Brownfield Network website. KOMU
said on its website that experts predict that Missouri will
experience its third highest corn harvest in the record books.
As of September
11, the USDA estimates that the Missouri corn harvest is 31
percent complete with 81 percent of the corn crop mature.
The state is expected to produce 360 million bushels of corn
this harvest.
