Is
nose piercing the hot new trend?

Employees
at Rebel Tattoos said that 40 to 50 people come in to get
their noses pierced every week. They said it is one of the
most popular places to get pierced, along with the belly button.
It’s
not just college kids that think nose rings are attractive.
According to coolnurse.com, the people of India view nose
piercing as a sign of beauty. Is attractiveness the only thing
causing college kids to get their noses pierced? “I
decided to get a nose ring because I think they are really
cute and dainty on girls,” said Molly Brown, MU freshman.
“I
got my nose pierced because I turned 18 and wanted to do something
kind of drastic. I wanted it for a short period of time to
show my parents I could do something without their permission.
I heard that piercings on your face close really fast, and
thus it would close after I would take it out,” said
Paige Kissel a sophomore at MU.
“I
did cheerleading in high school, and I brought up getting
my nose pierced at practice. All the girls thought it would
look so good on me, and convinced me I really should get it.
After the cheerleading season was over, I got it done,”
said Kissel.
There
are risks, though, if a professional doesn’t do the
nose piercing. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention
advises people to check out the places they get their piercing
from. There is a high risk of blood borne pathogen exposures
if a professional doesn’t do the piercing. Some of the
pathogens are HIV and all forms of Hepatitis.
Body
piercing may seem like a new fad, but it’s been popular
in other cultures for centuries. Sometimes they were done
as a mark of royalty, said CDC. Body piercing in any place
other than the ear lobe is relatively new in our culture.
Is body piercing in the U.S. an act of spontaneity in this
generation or do people plan a time in their lives to get
it done? “I had the nose ring for about three months,
and I didn’t really like it anymore. My spur of spontaneity
had vanished, and I started to think it was time to take it
out,” said Kissel.
Why would
people pierce their noses instead of getting a tattoo when
they’re feeling spontaneous? “My nose piercing
left no scarring or tissue damage. It really was one of the
easiest piercings that's out there,” said Kissel.
Nose
piercings can be easy, or according to some students surveyed
by health care professionals through tribalectic.com, they
can lead to problems. Of the college students surveyed, 51
percent had body piercings. Of those students, 30 percent
had no problems, 45 percent had severe infections, 39 percent
had severe skin irritation, and 13 percent had to visit a
health care professional. Of these same students that were
surveyed, 48 percent said they got the piercing as a form
of self-expression, 38 percent just wanted one, 21 percent
got it to be different, and 21 percent as a beauty mark.
However
nose piercing is viewed, it’s getting more and more
popular in today’s society, according CDC.
