Sigma
Alpha recruitment

A
bright purple sequence vest with a plaid shirt underneath,
a rainbow striped sweater with a polka dot skirt, or a camouflage
t-shirt accented with bright pink high heels, sounds just
like a typical outfit for a college student, right? Maybe
this is not so typical. Could this possibly be a fashion statement?
As the recruits for Sigma Alpha walked down a mock runway
in the Agricultural Engineering Building last Tuesday, the
active members of Sigma Alpha placed their votes for the “Most
Wacky and Tacky Outfit.” This was one of many scheduled
events for the recruits of Sigma Alpha during recruitment
week, Sept. 9th-15th.
The title
of “Most Wacky and Tacky Outfit” was shared by
recruits Susan Monnig and Holly Newcomer. Monnig’s outfit
included an Irish top with a blue jean vest, checkered pajama
pants and a button covered Wal-Mart vest. “The Irish
top I had on under the blue jean vest was from an old ice-skating
outfit,” Monnig said. “The checkered PJ pants
were given to me by a friend and she had told me to never
wear them out in public, which was exactly what I did.”
Recruitment
Week for Sigma Alpha began on Saturday, Sept. 9th with a pancake
breakfast at 9 a.m. in the Agricultural Engineering Building.
Active Sigma Alpha members had their first chance to get acquainted
with the recruits as they filled up on pancakes. Sunday, Sept.
10th included a morning worship service at The Crossing Church
and then an afternoon of trash pick-up at the sorority’s
Adopt-A-Spot.
Events
during the week included an MU Spirit Night held on Monday,
Sept. 11th at 6:30 p.m.. The ladies split into groups to test
their Mizzou knowledge and show off their Tiger spirit. Questions
were asked such as: What year was CAFNR established and name
as many buildings on campus that you can think of. Being new
on campus as a transfer student, Monnig felt she did decent
on the Mizzou trivia. “I did okay, but my group had
some older Mizzou students so we did awesome,” said
Monnig.
Wednesday,
Sept. 13th brought the recruits out in their professional
dress for interviews with the active Sigma Alpha members.
As the ladies walked into the Animal Science Research Center,
they chattered nervously amongst each other, not quite knowing
what to expect as they entered each of the six interviewing
rooms. “I am absolutely horrible at coming up with answers
off the top of my head,” Munnig said. “So I was
freaking out the whole time.” During the evening, the
recruits rotated between the six rooms for interviews.
“Genuine
leadership experience, personality, involvement in agriculture,
and why they would be an asset to the sorority are all traits
that are accounted for during interviewing,” Erin Sappington,
president of Sigma Alpha said. Interviews began at 6 p.m.
Wednesday evening and ended around 9:30 p.m. That was only
the beginning of the night for the active Sigma Alpha members.
After the interviews took place, the active members had the
tough job of deciding who of the recruits would become members
of Sigma Alpha. Discussion and voting behind closed doors
lasted until approximately midnight.
The recruits
picked up their bids at Gentry Hall on Friday morning after
8 a.m. Seventeen out of 43 recruits where given bids for the
2006-2007 school year. Friday evening included top-secret
activities for the new Sigma Alpha members. Anyone that was
not a member of Sigma Alpha was set off limits during the
events of Bid Day.
As an
active member of the sorority, the ladies must follow certain
requirements. “The members must have a certain number
of service hours, keep their GPA up, belong to CAFNR or be
involved in the agriculture field, and participate in professional
development,” Sappington said.
Chairwomen
for this year’s Recruitment Week were Megan Gallup and
Amanda Davenport. “I began preparing for this week in
June,” Gallup said. “We have been busy promoting
Sigma Alpha at such events as the Missouri State Fair, and
encouraging any students involved or interested in agriculture
to participate in recruitment week.”
