Among national royalty
Holly Bellis, posted Nov. 7, 2006

Missouri has been home to state royalty over the years, but this year, MU is home to two national queens. Mallory Trosper currently serves as Miss American Angus and Lori Guthals currently serves as the American Salers Queen.

Trosper, a sophomore majoring in pre-nursing, hails from Hamilton, Mo. and has shown Angus cattle for over 11 years. The reign of Miss American Angus began last November when Trosper was crowned at the North American International Livestock Exposition. Her reign will end at the same event on Nov. 13.

When asked about what she enjoyed most, Trosper said, “There are numerous things that I enjoy about my title. The most exciting of those are all the places that I get to travel to and all the people that I meet. I have traveled across the country during my reign, and have made friends from coast to coast.”

To earn her title, Trosper has jumped through many hoops. The Miss American Angus contest consists of a written test, interview, speech and impromptu answer session. After all of this, Trosper ended up on top. When asked if she had any advice to pass on to younger girls who are looking to go for the title, she said, “My advice would be to keep detailed records of all of your involvement, from Angus activities to community, church and volunteer services. Be active.”

Guthals, a junior majoring in agricultural journalism, began her reign in July. Her reign will end next July. So far, she has represented the Salers breed at the Missouri State Fair and the American Royal. Guthals looks forward to attending the North American International Livestock Exposition in a few weeks and the Denver Stock Show next year.

Guthals followed criteria much like Trosper to earn her title. The only difference is that Guthals was also judged on how she worked the ring during a certain exhibition show. Guthals has been showing cattle her entire life.

When asked if she had any advice to pass on to someone else interested in the title, Guthals said, “I would tell them to go for it. Not only is this a great opportunity to meet new people and travel the country, but it’s fun. Being able to represent cattle, especially Salers cattle in this sort of capacity, all over the country is a great honor and I encourage anyone with this kind of opportunity to take it.”
