LGBT
brownbag promotes discussion and awareness

Eleven students discussed religion and sexuality at a brownbag lunch sponsored
by the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Resource Center from noon to 1:00
p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 11. Freshman LGBT staff member Joel Shultz led the discussion
in 216 Brady Commons.
Shultz brought up questions about where different religions stand
on the issue of homosexuality. Students offered their thoughts
about how to interpret various
religious beliefs on the topic and how to respond to those reactions.
Shultz hopes that this and other events will increase awareness
and understanding about the LGBT community.
“We are a minority and we are present,” Shultz
said.
Acceptance is the most important, according to Shultz. Understanding
is secondary.
“If you’re not part of the LGBT community, you can’t understand
it so much,” the discussion group leader said.
Despite a smaller attendance than he’d hoped,
Shultz thought the discussion went relatively well. He put approximately
20 hours of work into preparing.
Adam Brigham, the LGBT Resource Center Coordinator, came up with
the idea for the brownbag.
The event was part of Coming Out Week, which runs this year from
Oct. 10-16
