Fall Round-up welcomes CAFNR freshmen
By Rachel Smeda

Approximately 225 CAFNR freshmen enjoyed a presentation, club fair and free dinner during CAFNR Fall Round-up Thursday night, Sept. 8. With a theme of “Rockin' CAFNR,” several students showed off their CAFNR spirit by sporting their favorite 80s attire.

The evening started at 5:30 p.m. in the Monsanto Auditorium of the new Life Sciences Center, continued in the adjacent Agriculture Building and ended in the courtyard between these two buildings with dinner.

“The purpose of tonight is to help students realize the opportunities they have and challenge them to get more fully involved,” Dr. Jim Spain, CAFNR assistant dean of academic programs, said.

The presentation in Monsanto auditorium served to welcome students and whet their appetites for involvement in all that CAFNR has to offer. Spain pushed for students to find a niche.

“In your high school, 98 percent of you were involved and making a difference. What are you going to do to make a difference now that you’re here?” Spain said.

Students later moved to the Agriculture Building where CAFNR clubs and organizations had tables set up with information and sign-up sheets. With 30 clubs represented, students had no shortage of options.

During the presentation, Dean Tom Payne welcomed freshmen to the college.

“Let us know what’s working, but more importantly, what isn’t,” Payne said, showing that CAFNR is eager to adapt to its students’ needs.

Three CAFNR seniors shared advice from their experiences. Margy Fisher, agricultural journalism major, talked about internships. John McRoberts, fisheries and wildlife major, discussed research opportunities. Heather Shauck, agribusiness management major, shared from her experience with study abroad.

Spain introduced various staff members and identified their roles in helping the students and the college.

A free chicken dinner provided by Tyson Foods topped off the evening for the freshmen.

Jaclyn DeWeese and Cord Jenkins, co-chairs of the CAFNR Student Council Fall Round-up committee, planned this years’ event.
