CAFNR
Connections mentoring program kicks off
Alice Roach
The
CAFNR Connections mentoring program made its debut Monday, Sept.
26, as part of CAFNR Week. Both students and alumni mentors gathered
in Eckles Hall 154 for an evening of "Mocktails with Mentors."
The
program for the evening included introductions by Jeff Windett,
president of the Ag Alumni Association and Stephanie Chipman, director
of CAFNR Career Services. Windett expressed his enthusiasm
for the new program.
“I
thought it was a great way for students to network with alumni,” Windett
said. “I think it will pay huge dividends.”
Leslie
Jett of the hotel and restaurant management program shared tips
for etiquette and networking with the participants. He outlined
five areas that if students excel in, they can “outclass
the competition.”
Those five
things are:
- Presence
- Mingling
- Remembering
names
- Business
card etiquette
- Communication
and follow-up
He also shared
his personal tips for students who would be interacting with
industry people in professional settings.
“No
matter what is going on, say 'please' and 'thank you' as much as
possible — be
courteous,” Jett said.
Students
then had the opportunity to hone their skills as they met and networked
with alumni and friends of the college who have committed to serving
as mentors.
