Something for everybody
By Jennifer Hancock

It’s here, and everybody’s talking about it. At MizzouRec, the new student recreation center, there’s something for everyone.

There’s a lot to see at MizzouRec. Visit the Tiger Lair to adventure through the jungle while cycling through audio and visual shows. Join the Free-Style Kick boxing and Self Defense classes in the Martial Arts room. The climbing tower and rock wall are there for your use too. Of course, there are the always-traditional ten sports courts, five racquetball courts and indoor track.

The Mizzou Aquatic Center is the main highlight of the new facility. The entire aquatic center holds one and a half million gallons of water. There are three options for swimming recreation: the 50-meter Competitive Pool Complex, Tiger Grotto and Truman’s Pond. The 50m Competitive Pool gives MU students the opportunity to lap swim with ease. For those who just need to get out and relax a little, Tiger Grotto and Truman’s Pond are the places.

Tiger Grotto provides a relaxing atmosphere with lots to do. Experience the lazy river, heated spa, Vortex Whirlpool, sauna and steam rooms. Oh, and don’t forget your laptop because Tiger Grotto is equipped with wireless Internet. If you prefer swimming in the sun, don’t worry, just head outside to Truman’s Pond. With the waterfall and beach style access to the pool, it may even feel as if you’ve left MU.

To get a great cardio workout, head to The Jungle Gym. It has a lot to offer. With 100 pieces of cardio workout equipment, 11 flat panel TVs, technology to listen to your favorite workout CD, or even watch a DVD, working out will no longer be boring. The Jungle Gym also has a quiet room so you can study while jogging on the treadmill, working out on the stepper, or riding the bike.

When most students are asked about MizzouRec one of their first responses is in reference to the size. Sophomore Journalism major Caitlin Downey makes a trip to MizzouRec about every other day and every other weekend. While she’s there, she makes her time useful in the Jungle Gym.

“There are a lot of machines, but it can still get pretty crowded during certain times of the day,” Downey said.

Once you’ve got your cardio in, head on over to the Pump Room. The Pump Room is always full of energy to keep you going. It offers many different weight lifting machines along with free weights and dumbbell racks.

For the more relaxed workout, visit TigerX. They have classes to accommodate anybody’s workout goals. It costs $7 per class or $46 for a semester. Professionals from Columbia teach the TigerX classes.

If at any moment during your workout you feel like you need re-energized, make your way to The Bar in the Jungle Gym. The Bar is a place to get great, healthy energy drinks or snacks. All you need is your student ID to charge for it.

While most students have positive thoughts on MizzouRec, there are still some that get frustrated with the environment. Lydia Miller, a sophomore studying Family Studies gets frustrated with the crowds.

“There’s always a lot of people, which limits the availability of the machines, ” said Miller.

Whether you’re interested in a Lifetime Health and Performance class, a personal trainer, wheelchair basketball, or Mizzou Club Sports, make your way to MizzouRec. There’s way too much to pass up.
