Students
in Residence Halls Help with Katrina Relief

All across Campus, students in residence halls
have been doing their part to help with Katrina relief. Several
of the Campus’s 22 halls began Penny Wars and set up donation
boxes last week to get students excited about helping with relief.
Hatch and Schurz Halls, as well as the Pershing Commons are participating
in the collection. Groups compete by adding pennies to their jars
for points and silver coins or dollars to other teams’ jars
for negative points. Competition in Hatch and Schurz is between
floors, with all proceeds going to the Red Cross. Hatch Hall completed
their collection on Sept. 21, with a total donation of $1659.38.
In Pershing Commons, competition takes place between halls. Proceeds
will be sent to the charity of each hall’s choice. Proceeds
from Baker-Park and Gardner-Hyde Halls will go to the Red Cross;
Cramer Hall will go to the United Way; Defoe Hall to St. Peter
the Apostle School in Pascagoula, Ms.; Graham Hall to Habitat
for Humanity; and Stafford Hall to the Salvation Army.
“I gave to Penny Wars because my roommate and another guy
on my floor have family down there and I figured it was the least
I could do. I am also ridiculously competitive,” Alex Rohr,
freshman Hatch Hall journalism major said.
Other forms of contribution include a donation box in Lathrop
Hall and individual fundraisers in Laws Hall. Excellence, Respect
and Johnston Halls are still deciding how they plan to help.
