CAFNR week: student editorial
By Kelly Christopherson

With CAFNR Week drawing to a close, I reflect back on my first time participating in the activities. I've been to just about every single event there was to go to this week and I’ve noticed a few things.

First, let it be known that I’m a transfer student and have never before been to an agriculture related event of this size; barring State and National FFA Conventions from the picture. The sheer magnitude of the participation was incredible in my book.

Except for one thing: I thought this was CAFNR Week? Then where were the clubs from the rest of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources? I might have missed something, but I saw only Ag-related clubs at all of the events I went to. I’m pretty sure everyone in the college knew about CAFNR week. If you walked through the Ag Building once, you saw enough signs or references to it to make you want to scratch your eyes out.

Then why was there no participation from the other groups? Was it the out-for-blood point’s competition that scared them away? A little friendly competition never hurt anyone, but I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen a rivalry that’s as bad as GDI and Alpha Gamma Rho except for possibly Mizzou and Nebraska.

Evidently, even other ag groups have lowered participation, namely Farmhouse and Alpha Gamma Sigma. I saw a few random members at some events but nothing like the numbers other groups like Sigma Alpha had.

Oh, but props to Farmhouse for showing up at Skit Night. Even though no one could hear the skit without microphones, it looked good. And I personally thought their lip sync was by far the best, even though I’m pretty sure no one but I knew what the song “Numa Numa” was. Hint: if you want to know, type the name into Yahoo! and click on the one with “blacksheep” written in the URL.

So I guess my question is this: Why was there a big commotion over changing the name from Ag Week to CAFNR Week to include everyone when it included no one new? It seems like a big deal over nothing. In my opinion there should be one of two things done: change the name back to Ag Week because for some reason people are really unhappy about the switch or try to pump up the publicity to other clubs outside of the agriculture side.

I’m sure the rest of the college would love to hear Dr. Spain telling KU jokes at next years Skit Night.
