Tigers'
Week to Hoe Down the Jayhawks March 5, 2004 - According to Alumni Association, "The University of Missouri-Columbia and the University of Kansas are known to be opponents since 1907." In addition, they are noted "the second oldest rivalry west of the Mississippi" and they have traditionally attempted to prove their strength by battling each other in sports competitions. Since then, the Tigers and the Jayhawks have traded insults, jokes and fights. Assuming that KU students didn't know their left from their right, a junior business major, who wants to remain anonymous, said, "Anyone that is from the University of Kansas should go to his or her other left when arriving at the Hearnes Center from campus." "Some of the MU vs. KU games in the past have not shown sportsmanship and the fans' conduct have not been commendable. It's ridiculous," sophomore biochemistry major, Katelin Grover. "Yeah MU and KU are rivals but we must show some respect for the opposing team. We should be the better team," According to the Topeka-Capital
Journal, MU and KU have met to battle each other approximately "243
times on court, with Kansas winning 153 and MU winning 88 in MU vs.
KU sports games." Now the basketball teams are meeting for the
244th time and fans are anxious to see who is going to take the lead
during the March 7th tournament of basketball. The week featured a number
of activities where fans met at the Speakers Circle to raise money by
bashing a blue and red car, the prestigious colors of KU. Other activities
such as pop a shot, spirit rally, and chicken roast included coach Quin
Synder, Truman the tiger and the spirit squad. Even residential communities
such as Baker-Park and Gardner Hyde are throwing a barbeque and cafeterias
such as Rollins are hosting a "Eat the Jayhawks" breakfast
before the game.
