Tigers showing strong arms through first 20 games
Ryan Maris, Corner Post Staff

Mizzou was ranked 33rd in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers' Poll and 26th in the ESPN/Sports Weekly Poll. This was before the loss to Illinois State but the Tigers look to rebound within the next week.

The Tigers recently completed a seven game road trip, getting five wins, one loss, and one tie. They started out in Seattle against the University of Washington, starting with 16 to two win, then losing 11 to six, and tying six to six. The tie was due to traveling arrangements with the Tigers, who were in the tenth inning when they had to call the game.

Mizzou then traveled to Millington, Tennessee for the Easton/USA Baseball Challenge. They played Wake Forest first, winning five to four in another extra inning game, this one going 12 innings. Their next game was against Indiana State, who they beat seven to six. The Tigers won their third game of the tournament against Memphis, three to two. The final game was against the host team, University of Tennessee-Millington. Mizzou won that game seven to three, and took home the title.

This is the road that has brought the Tigers in with a .789 winning percentage, without the tie, heading into spring break. As a team Mizzou has 19 home runs, 14 of them from three players, and 130 runs batted in. The Tigers are hitting .281 as a team through the first 20 games.

The pitching staff is holding opponents to a .240 average, and striking out 170 as a staff. Their earned run average is 3.10, which means about three earned runs for every nine innings pitched. The Tigers have four wins and two losses at home and are averaging 378 fans a game despite the sub-par baseball weather of February and March. Fans and the Athletic Department expect many fans will come out to support the Tigers as they are showing national power this year, and hot dogs are only a dollar for Tuesday and Wednesday games
