"20 Million Loud" reaches out to young adults
Adam Buckallew, Corner Post Staff

May 3, 2004 - The last election was decided by 500,000 votes nationwide. In some states, the difference was 50,000, 5,000, or 500 votes. 18 million young people voted in the last election. What if it were 20 million? That is the question being posed to young people by 20 Million Loud, a national campaign of organizations mobilizing more than 20 million young adults ages 18-30 to vote and be a deciding factor in the 2004 presidential election.

Two of the main supporters of the "20 Million Loud" campaign are cable network MTV and voter organization "Rock the Vote." MTV has adopted the "20 Million Loud" slogan as part of their "Choose or Lose" campaign to reach out to young adults. MTV has set up a website at www.chooseorlose.com where people interested in the coming election can post comments, read stories, and get information about political topics. The main goal of the website is to encourage young adults to register and vote in the November election.

The website also encourages young people to "meet-up" with each other and to discuss the important political topics that we face as a nation. Rock the Vote meet-ups are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7 p.m. at a location that participants can choose. Participants in these meet-ups will have the opportunity to have their ideas and opinions heard on MTV, gain access to exclusive MTV and Rock the Vote stuff and to tell MTV who they think should be president. There are currently 9,341 registered members in over 476 cities participating in the Rock the Vote meet-ups.

Anyone interested in participating locally can do so on May 4 at 7 p.m. at the Coffee Zone, 11 N. 9th St. Participants are given the opportunity to make what they want of the meet-ups, and there is no set direction the meetings must follow.
