Schon's speech survives delays,
offers success suggestions
Derrick Ming, Corner Post staff
Oct. 21, 2002 - After some initial technical difficulties, Mary
Schon, Epcot Center manager of science communications, gave a
highly anticipated speech to students in ag journalism 210 Oct.
21.
Technical problems, the layout of the room, and time management
all contributed to the delay of Schon's speech. Even though Schon
did not have enough time or have a perfect setup for her speech,
she gave students a number of powerful messages to take with them.
One of the messages was that of communication.
"Communication will take you far or leave you far behind,"
Schon said.
She said that at Epcot, if one does not have good communication
skills, then they are already at a disadvantage for getting a
job.
"Disney is based on storytelling, and in order to tell a
great story and keep the audience interested, you have to be a
great communicator," Schon said.
She also said you should search for the right career.
"Find something that you are passionate about and do it,"
Schon said.
She said she never thought she would work at a place like Walt
Disney World, but it was the best thing that happened to her.
Schon also took questions from students and offered information
about internships with Walt Disney World.
