Family weekend: Full of fun

Rachele Kloppe, Corner Post staff

August 30, 2002 - Family Weekend is a tradition that college students often hear about. It is a time when moms and dads come to MU to meet friends and new roommates early in the semester. Parents can also see how their sons and daughters are adjusting to life away from home.

"Family Weekend gives parents a chance to relax and is a more casual setting than Summer Welcome," said Dana Brown, CAFNR Director of the Office of Career Services. "It gives them an opportunity to meet people within the colleges."

Family Weekend will take place Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28. A movie and comedy act are scheduled for Friday night, and Saturday is about football and the arts.

The movie, Amelie, has a $1.00 admission charge and is showing at 7 p.m. and 9:30 p.m. at Jesse Wrench Auditorium in Memorial Union.

The Second City National Touring Company, an improvisational comedy group, will perform at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the Historic Missouri Theatre in downtown Columbia. Ticket costs will be $8.00 for students and $10.00 for the general public.

The Family Weekend Tailgate will take place from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Hearnes Fieldhouse. Highlights include appearances by Truman the Tiger and the Golden Girls pep squad. Prices are $5.00 for kids 12 and under and $10.00 for everyone else.

Following the tailgate, Mizzou's football team will take on Troy State at
1 p.m. on Faurot Field. Tickets are $26.00, and there will be a special Family Weekend seating section at Memorial Stadium, according to Sam Babalola who works in the Student Services Office.

However, those who aren't football fans can attend Columbia's Festival of the Arts. It lasts from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Columbia and showcases music, dance, theater and literature.

Although these are the suggested events to attend, there is no formal agenda.

Brown sees the event as valuable and recommends attendance.

"It gives the parents a chance to visit and meet your roommate," Brown said.

"Family Weekend is for everybody, even if you're a member of a fraternity or sorority," Babalola said. "They take advantage of it and have their moms and dads come down."

Although there are no special accommodations at area hotels, Babalola said the hotels have been informed about Family Weekend.

"I've heard of people's brothers and sisters kickin' it with their older siblings in the residence halls at night," Babalola said. "That's definitely acceptable, too."

This year, the College of Agriculture, Food, and Natural Resources (CAFNR) has no special event planned for the weekend.

"The college usually has their family weekend in conjunction with Fall Fest," Brown said. "However, [this year's] timing did not work well, along with other factors."
