No more lottery?

Heather Hogg, Corner Post staff

Oct. 15, 2002 - The lottery system for MU men's basketball tickets is gone, leaving some students wondering how the new system will work and why the old one left.

The new system will allow students who really want to go to games opportunities to get good seats, according to Travis White of the MU ticket office.

"Before, if people got a bad number from the lottery, they would be stuck with the general admission seats all season," White said. "With the new program, there will be an opportunity to get better seats if you try for them."

There will be 4,500 seats for students at each game, with the exception of the Kansas game when there will be 6,000 seats available.

Not all students will receive tickets for every game. Instead, students can pick up vouchers six times during the year. Each voucher will be good for general admission tickets to certain games only. Pick-up dates are listed below:

— Oct. 21-Oct. 25 - EA Sports, Mid-West All Stars, American     University, Austin Peay

— Nov. 11-Nov.15 - Sacramento State, Wisconsin Green Bay,     Memphis

— Nov. 18-Nov.22 - Valparaiso, Centenary, Baylor

— Dec. 9-Dec.13 - Iowa State, Colorado, Texas Tech

— Jan. 27-Jan. 31 - Kansas State, Nebraska, Oklahoma

— Feb. 17-Feb. 21 - Kansas

Once the 4,500 vouchers are given out, no more seats will be available.

The first 1,961 students will receive wristbands for A, B and C section seats. The other 2,539 students will receive a different color wristband for upper deck seating.

The number of seats available has not decreased this year, and students will sit in the same sections as last year.

The number of all-sports passes sold has decreased this year, but whether the number has changed because of the new seating system cannot be determined, according to the ticket office.

Although some students said they are unhappy with the new system, White said it is comparable to other schools.

There will be no upgrade fees for men's basketball tickets, but the all-sports pass did increase in price this year to $200.

White said he believes the new system will continue to be used in the future, but there may be a few kinks that will need to be worked out.
