- After a week that included lip syncing, being interviewed and
participating in nearly every possible event, Ben Marshall, ag
education major, and Dana Henke, ag education and ag journalism
double major, became King and Queen of Ag Week 2002 Friday night.
The winners were announced at the Barnwarmin' dance, which took
place at Nitro dance club.
Marshall and Henke, who represented the Agrculture Learning Community
and Sigma Alpha, respectively, will each receive a $400 scholarship
for winning.
The winners were chosen based on several tasks.
The contestants attended interviews, conducted by a panel of judges
composed of both faculty and community members, according to Lori
Jackson, Ag Week Steering Committee member. They also received
points for performing a lip sync during Skit Nite and participating
in Community Service, Skit Nite, Volleyball and either the Washers
Tournament or the Stick Horse Rodeo. Contestants also wrote essays.
Marshall, a sophomore, said he was surprised that he had won,
considering he was one of two underclassman contestants.
"Whenever they called my name, my legs went numb," Marshall
said. "I'm just on Cloud Nine right now."
Henke said she was glad to represent Sigma Alpha as its queen
candidate. "There's a lot of highly qualified people running,"
Henke said. "I mean, we're the leaders of the Ag School.
It's just hard to compete against all that."
Twenty-four students representing 12 agricultural organizations
competed as king and queen candidates.
