CAFNR on Air

Oct. 1, 2002 - We invite them into our homes in the morning. They accompany us on long road trips. At work, they keep us company. Who are these constant companions we all have? Our local radio announcers, of course.

Students and faculty of the College of Agriculture, Food and Natural Resources were given a chance to see how a local radio broadcaster does his job when Tom Brand of KFEQ visited MU Monday.

Brand broadcast live from Jesse Wrench Auditorium in Memorial Union from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The broadcast was sponsored by the Mizzou Agricultural Communicators of Tomorrow and the Ag Journalism 160 class.

Brand started his newscast by interviewing Jacob Shellabarger, agricultural journalism major, about MU's Agricultural Journalism program, today's farming issues, Shellabarger's farming background and his future plans. Brand then moved on through the market reports pulled off the Internet.

During commercial breaks, Brand visited with audience members and told them about his career.

Marilyn Cummins, coordinator of MU's Agricultural Journalism program, spoke about two ag journalism classes she teaches, CAFNR Corner Post and the Ag J program.

Brand then played a segment called Crop Tour, which is broadcast regularly by KFEQ.

Megan Perry, agricultural journalism major, told Brand and the listeners why she chose ag journalism for her major. She also shared information about her livestock judging experiences and ended by sharing her perspective on the future of agriculture. Perry said being on a live broadcast was exciting.
