New Pedestrian Bridge over College Avenue Makes Crossing Faster and Safer for Students
By Allyssa Berry, Corner Post Staff

Just as promised, as part of Mizzou’s Master Plan, the bridge over College is completed and already providing a better connection between East and West Campus. The construction on the bridge began last fall, and the front access driveway of Schurz was closed off during the 2004 Winter Semester. Residents of Schurz Hall are grateful for the bridge being done when classes started again in August.

“You don’t get run over trying to cross the road anymore!” said sophomore Schurz resident Ben Miller.

Freshman students in Schurz Hall are also thrilled to have this new structure connecting their dorm with their classes and new dining complex, Plaza 900.

“I heard stories about having to wait 5 minutes to cross the road, and the bridge just makes everything faster and safer,” said freshman Samantha Blaue.

There are a few students who say they will miss the thrill of trying to dodge the cars on their way to class, but the hazard of doing this every time when crossing the road has been eliminated.

“I always enjoyed a good game of “Frogger” before class in the morning,” said senior Schurz resident Travis Thies with a smile. Travis would have to agree, though, that the bridge is helpful during the rush hours of the day.

According to Carl Schurz Hall Coordinator, Justin Shepherd, there are over 1,000 students in Hatch and Schurz Residence Halls on East campus that are already using this new walkway on a daily basis.
