Overholser Holds a Distance Conference for MU students
By Billy Pipp, Corner Post staff

There is a first for everything and last week students in Journalism FIG’s were treated to one. Geneva Overholser, a Missouri Professor working in Washington D.C. gave a video conference to four Journalism FIG’s.

The video conference was a first for most of the students who gathered in Fisher Auditorium to talk about the principles of journalism and more specifically the naming of the, “victim” in a rape case.

Students were encouraged to ask any journalism related question they wanted to, but most stayed on the topic of journalistic principles. Overholser briefly touched on her resignation from the Poynter Institute. Overholser resigned in September after naming Kobe Bryants accuser in an article she wrote.

“Poynter payed more attention to social work and protecting her, rather then journalistic principle,” Overholser said. “We don’t even know if he (Kobe Bryant) was a rapist or if she was raped, so therefore no victim can be named.”

Julia Luscher a FIG leader said that she hopes this discussion got students thinking about journalistic principles.
