Family Weekend Open House Held for Who's New at MU
By Matt Dingler, Corner Post Staff

September 18, 2004- Mizzou’s Family Weekend Open House began early for CAFNR students and parents. Families began entering the Life Sciences Center at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning.

Dr. Tom Payne, Dean of CAFNR, started the festivities by leading guests in chants of, “M-I-Z…Z-O-U!”

When guests showed little enthusiasm, Payne threatened them with his speech of about 13 pages. With a little help from Dr. Jim Spain, guests let out a more spirited “M-I-Z…Z-O-U!”

Payne spoke on the newly established Life Sciences Center and important work that will be done in it, one example being lab research.

“Let us [CAFNR Staff] know at all times what’s working for you, and more importantly let us know what’s not working,” Payne said to the students at the close of his speech.

Dr. Don Arnsperger, President of MU Ag Alumni Association, then spoke on Alumni functions such as their annual golf tournament, banquet, and auction. A portion of money collected at these events goes to scholarship funding.

The secret to CAFNR’s success was revealed when Associate Dean of Academic Programs Dr. Paul Vaughn, told guests that it’s the “family type atmosphere” that students love about the college. Nods from the crowd suggested they felt the same.

Departmental tours of the college capped off the morning.
