Ribbon Cutting Held at Life Sciences Center

September 23, 2004- University of Missouri-Columbia welcomes citizens and guests to the Life Sciences Center dedication and open house.

Friday afternoon a crowd of individuals and dignitaries gathered at the main entrance of the Life Sciences Center where the ribbon cutting ceremonies were performed. The Columbia Chamber of Commerce, Governor Bob Holden, and UM System President, Elson Floyd were among those assisting in the ribbon cutting festivities. The dedication of the Life Sciences Center comes over 3 years since ground breaking ceremonies were performed.

“(The Life Science Center is) only a beginning of a great journey that will lead to success” Governor Holden said.

The Life Sciences Center is designed for faculty and students to conduct research and education across the entire MU campus. The state-of-the-art center will be promoting world leadership in research and education of the life sciences. The center has 50 research laboratories, 5 computer laboratories, and a 250-seat auditorium.

Senator Kit Bond said the center, “will move the state, nation, and all of mankind forward.”

“The Life Sciences Center is a facility all Missourian’s can take pride in,” said President Elson Floyd as guests had reconvened in the Monsanto Auditorium.

Director of the Life Sciences Center, Dr. Michael Roberts also assured the audience that the center, “isn’t a typical department, it’s a campus building for all areas of campus.”

Other speakers included Michael Gerau, a senior microbiology major and Amanda Cully Brodeur, a first year medical student. Governor Bob Holden then addressed the audience, followed by U.S. Senator, Christopher “Kit” Bond and NASA Administrator, Sean O’Keefe. The dedication ceremonies ended with special recognition and awards presented to those who assisted in the success of the Life Sciences Center.

An open house and tours of the facility followed the program. Entertainment was provided by the Hennessy Brothers, Alaadeen Jazz Ensemble, and Rank Sinatras.
